In 1873 Timothy O' Sullivan was the first to photograph the Ruins in the Canyon de Chelle, N.M. as part of the Wheeler Expedition. O'Sullivan's print is Silver Nitrate in an Albumen suspension

Ansel Adams [Left] photographed the ruins again in 1943, 70 years later, in his View from river valley, "Canyon de Chelly" as part of his Department of the Interior commission. He printed his 5x7 negative with silver chlorobromide gelatine-fiber based papers. This photographer [above] searched out the same subject in 1991, spanning over 118 years of Tripod Holes - with the White House Ruin - Canyon De Chelly." I scanned my 4x5 negative and printed this version digitally on German Etching Paper with PiezoTone Selenium and Museum Black quadtoned inks. This print is available as a digital pigment print from Digital Pigment Editions and is just as beautiful and haunting as each of the other two interpretations in photographic media that has spanned over a century! |
